Every day we work to educate our patients about their symptoms, diseases, and management options. The resources below are designed to help you learn more about your condition and the care you receive.

Important: The content on this site is intended to supplement — not replace — the care provided by your healthcare team. It is not intended for self-diagnosis or self-management. Always discuss your symptoms and treatment plan with your physician.

Understanding Esophageal Disorders

The esophagus is the muscular tube that carries food and liquid from your throat to your stomach. Disorders of the esophagus can affect how food moves through this tube, cause discomfort, and impact your quality of life. Common conditions include:

  • Achalasia — A condition where the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax properly, making it difficult for food to pass into the stomach
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) — Chronic acid reflux that can damage the esophageal lining
  • Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) — An allergic/immune condition causing inflammation in the esophagus
  • Esophageal Motility Disorders — Conditions affecting the coordinated muscle contractions that move food through the esophagus
  • Barrett’s Esophagus — A condition where the esophageal lining changes due to chronic reflux, requiring monitoring
